In 1910 the German revolutionary Clara Zetkin proposed the 8th of March to be honored as a day annually in memory of working women. The day has been celebrated as International Women's Day or International Working Women's Day ever since.
In Russia and other countries, this day is celebrated as a national holiday!
But what do we actually celebrate on this day?
Equal civil rights (e.g. the right to vote) and treatment in the professional world (e.g. salary, position), free will and decision making concerning their body and future are some of the topics that feminists have tried and are still trying to establish.
Is it then just about rights?
Well, the answer is no. Fighting sexism is a complicated issue which is not easy to be traced since it is so deeply rooted in society, for both women and men. We are brought up with stereotypes, illusions and expectations, which are not necessarily compatible with the 21st century!
For all these reasons it is worthy to celebrate annually the accomplishments that women have achieved till today and reflect on how things could be better for both sexes.
